Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in May were about 7.7 million metric tons (Mt), up by nearly 3 percent from the level in May 2012, according to a recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey.
Shipments for the year through May were 29.7 Mt, up slightly. The leading portland cement-producing states in May were Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Michigan, in descending order and these shipped about 43 percent of the total shipments for the month.
The leading consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois, in descending order) received about 38 percent of the May total shipments.
Clinker production totaled about 6.7 Mt in May, about 7 percent more than the output in May 2012. Production for the year through May was 26.1 Mt, up slightly. The leading clinker producing states for the month were California, Texas, Missouri, Florida and Alabama, in descending order.
Masonry cement shipments in May of about 197,000 metric tons (t) were up by about 11 percent from those of the prior year. Shipments for the year through May were 815,000 t, up by about 6 percent.
The leading masonry cement-consuming states were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Georgia, and these received about 49 percent of May’s total shipments.
Preliminary results for June show shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico to be about 7.5 Mt, and roughly 37.1 Mt for the year through June. Masonry cement shipments in June are about 177,141 t.
